The Caves of Lumiang and Sumaguing: Revisited 2013

One of the many reasons why tourists visit Sagada is because of its natural beauty and because of its famous caves. Two of which are the Lumiang cave (Burial Cave) and the Sumaguing cave. These 2 caves are connected to each other and they have this tour called “cave connection”.

My first try was on 2003 with my college friends, followed by another trek with my office mates on 2011.

The trek starts at the Lumiang Cave. The rocks are sharp and dry. It took us 2 hours to reach the next cave - Sumaguing.

It took us 3.5 hours to finish the whole challenge. Both caves offer different attractions. The hanging coffins at the main entrance of Lumiang cave are just appetizers. From there, we started our descent for more than 100 feet passing through small passages. Aside from walking, we also did rappelling, climbing, embracing rocks, sliding down using your butt, going down high walls until we reached the part where different kinds of rock formations are located which are part of the Sumaguing cave.

This year, we again decided to go back and try the Sumaguing entrance this time.

The trek was shorter but as of equal difficulty.

Since it was raining during the whole duration of our cave exploration, the rocks are wet and slippery so we were all extra careful.

The water was extremely overflowing and the current inside was really strong that we need need to hold to the adjacent rocks with full grip.

This year's trip was all worth the return. Other travelers asked if I will try it for the fourth time, and all I can say  is, "Why not?"
